Who we are

Choral Christian (ChoralChristian.org) is an independent publication about choral Christian music — hymns, classical sacred repertoire, African choral music and contemporary Christian music. This policy explains what we collect when you read the site, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do about it.

If you have a question about anything here, write to kalese@choralchristian.org.

What we collect, and why

Comments

When you leave a comment we store the name, email address and optional website you enter, along with the comment itself. Your email address is never published and never shown to other readers; it exists so we can reply to you and so we can recognise repeat commenters.

We also store a one-way cryptographic hash of your IP address. A hash is not reversible — we cannot recover your IP address from it, and we do not store the address itself. It exists solely to rate-limit comment spam.

Comments are moderated before they appear. Once approved, your name, your website link if you gave one, and your comment text are public.

Reading the site

You do not need an account and we do not ask you to identify yourself in order to read anything here. We do not currently run any analytics package, so we do not build a profile of what you read.

If you choose a light or dark theme, that choice is saved in your own browser's local storage. It never leaves your device and is never sent to us.

Server logs

Our hosting provider records standard technical request data — IP address, browser user agent, the page requested and the time — for security and to keep the site running. These logs are retained for a limited period by the provider and are not used to profile readers.

Advertising

We use third-party advertising to help fund the publication.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites on the internet.

You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info, or, in Europe, at youronlinechoices.eu.

Third-party advertising vendors set and read their own cookies under their own privacy policies, which we do not control. Google's is available at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Readers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalised advertising cookies are set, and may withdraw that consent at any time.

Cookies we set ourselves

Beyond the theme preference described above, which is local storage rather than a cookie, Choral Christian sets no tracking cookies of its own. Any advertising cookies are set by the third-party vendors named in the section above.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with anyone except the service providers who make the site work — our hosting provider and our content system — and the advertising vendors described above. We will disclose data where we are legally required to do so.

How long we keep it

Approved comments and their associated data are kept indefinitely, so that a conversation on an article remains readable. Comment IP hashes are retained only as long as they are useful for spam rate-limiting. Server logs are retained according to our hosting provider's own schedule.

Your rights over your data

You can ask us to:

  • send you a copy of the personal data we hold about you;
  • correct anything that is wrong;
  • erase your comments and the data attached to them, except where we are obliged to keep something for legal or security reasons.

Write to kalese@choralchristian.org and we will act on it. If you are in the EEA or the UK, you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

Children's privacy

This site is suitable for readers of any age, but it is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We will post any changes on this page. Where a change materially affects how we handle your data, we will say so plainly rather than quietly editing the text.
